The Best Worship Songs for a Christian Wedding Ceremony and Cocktail Hour
/When a couple tells me their faith is at the center of their marriage, I know their music should reflect that as well. Some of the most powerful ceremony moments I have played as a violist did not come from a famous classical piece. They came from a worship song the couple had sung together on a Sunday morning, now filling the room as they made their vows before God and the people they love.
Contemporary worship music translates beautifully to strings. Without the lyrics, the melody carries the message. Guests who know these songs will hear the words anyway, (and probably start singing along) and those who don't will simply hear something beautiful.
Below are eleven worship songs I recommend for Christian weddings, organized by the moment where each one shines.
Why Worship Songs Work So Well on Strings
Most modern worship songs are built on simple, singable melodies and a slow, steady build. That arc is a gift to a string ensemble. We can open with a single cello or violin, add voices as the song grows, and arrive at the full ensemble right when the moment calls for it. Live musicians can also stretch or shorten a piece to match your processional, so the music lands where it should instead of fading out mid-phrase.
Prelude and Guest Seating
Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) by Hillsong UNITED Spacious, meditative, and full of long sustained lines, Oceans sets a reverent tone as guests find their seats. It quietly tells everyone in the room that this ceremony is about something bigger than a party.
Touch of Heaven by Hillsong Worship Gentle and prayerful, Touch of Heaven is a lovely prelude choice for couples who want the room to feel like worship before the first word is spoken.
Processional
What A Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship This song has a stately, almost hymn-like quality that makes it a natural fit for the wedding party's entrance.
Goodness of God by Bethel Music A testimony of God's faithfulness is a fitting way to begin a covenant. The gentle opening and steady rise give us room to time the build so the fullest moment arrives just as the bride reaches the front.
The Blessing by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes Drawn from the priestly blessing in Numbers 6, The Blessing works as a processional, but it is equally moving underneath a prayer or a blessing offered by parents or the officiant.
Prayer, Unity Ceremony, and Communion
How He Loves by David Crowder Band Written by John Mark McMillan and made widely known by the David Crowder Band, How He Loves is intimate and tender. It is a beautiful choice for a unity candle, sand ceremony, feet washing, three-fold-cord braiding or any moment when the two of you become one before your guests.
So Will I (100 Billion X) by Hillsong UNITED With its sweeping theme of all creation responding to its Creator, So Will I is ideal during communion. Its long musical arc also lets us extend or repeat sections, so the music lasts exactly as long as the moment does.
Recessional
10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) by Matt Redman Rooted in Psalm 103, this song has the joy and lift to carry you back down the aisle as a married couple. It is also familiar to many congregations, so don't be surprised if a few guests start singing along.
Gratitude by Brandon Lake For couples who want a recessional that feels like a celebration of thanks, Gratitude delivers. Its energetic build makes for a memorable exit.
Cocktail Hour
You Say by Lauren Daigle Warm and mid-tempo, You Say shifts the mood from sacred ceremony to joyful celebration without losing the heart of the day.
Reckless Love by Cory Asbury Flowing and lyrical, Reckless Love is a wonderful cocktail hour piece that keeps the spirit of the ceremony alive while guests mingle.
Many of the songs above work just as well at cocktail hour. A Christian cocktail hour set can blend worship favorites with traditional hymns like It Is Well With My Soul and classical pieces like Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring for a sound that is both reverent and celebratory. We have even been asked to mix in some wedding-appropriate secular favorites such as Marry You (Bruno Mars), Accidentally In Love (Counting Crows), Enchanted (Taylor Swift), L-O-V-E (Nat King Cole) and Yellow (Coldplay) to create an upbeat transition to the reception.
A Few Tips…
Check with your church or officiant first. Some churches have strict guidelines for ceremony music, and it is always best to know them early.
Choose by moment, not just by favorite. A song that moves you in worship may be better suited for communion rather than for the processional. Think about the emotion that you want to create at each point in the ceremony.
Let live musicians handle the timing. Processionals rarely go exactly as rehearsed. A live ensemble can adjust in real time so the music always fits.
Blend worship with tradition. Worship songs sit beautifully alongside hymns and classical pieces, giving your ceremony both familiarity and timelessness.
